Askrigg
Askrigg is an ancient market village situated on the northern
side of Wensleydale and is overlooked by the peak of Addlebrough.
It is centrally situated in Wensleydale, only 5 miles from Hawes
to the west and 7 and 14 miles respectively from Aysgarth and
Leyburn to the east. Roads to the north of the village lead
to Thwaite and Muker in Swaledale or alternatively to Reeth
and on to Arkengarthdale. One mile to the south is Bainbridge
and a further 3 miles away is Semerwater, the largest natural
lake in Yorkshire.
Askrigg was formerly a place where wool was traded but more
recently it has become known for its use in the filming of the
BBC series All Creatures Great and Small, based on the James
Herriot stories. Cringley House, opposite Manor House, was used
for outside views of the vet's surgery, Skeldale House, while
the Kings Arms Hotel next door was used for scenes in the fictional
Drovers Arms.
